Meet the Founders
Why Second 50?
Our mission is to provide uniquely tailored financial solutions for high-net-worth individuals and families with a high focus on income planning, tax mitigation and wealth preservation.
We (Kathleen Adams and David Swift, Co-Founders) left one of the nation’s largest Registered Investment Advisory firms to launch Second 50 Financial. We predominantly cater to those who are approaching or in their second 50 years of life and are often faced with making very big, important decisions. They have recognized the need for strategic financial management to ensure the longevity and efficiency of their hard-earned wealth.
At Second 50 Financial, we operate on a simple philosophy: Clear and comprehensive understanding of one's current and future financial picture allows for superior wealth management. Through our objective financial planning service, we clarify together the most important goals for these investments thus arming our clients with the critical insights they need about their financial future.
Our investment management approach is distinct and sets us apart in the industry. We move beyond the traditional, static model of stock-and-bond-only portfolios. Instead, we embrace dynamic investment strategies, tailoring financial solutions that have consistently proven beneficial for our clients. Understanding that many of our clients prioritize the security of their investments over high-risk alternatives, we strategically include real estate and other private investments in our portfolios. These additions not only offer potential for enhanced tax efficiency and reduced volatility, but they also provide opportunities for additional risk-adjusted returns. Our portfolio design is meticulously crafted to yield consistent income and returns, with a primary focus on wealth preservation and stable income generation.
Alongside guiding investments, we also advise on intricate real estate decisions. Many of our clients grapple with complex real estate scenarios, such as when they own properties that have seen significant appreciation and yield substantial income. These situations demand sharp analytical insights. Furthermore, we have a wealth of experience in guiding decisions on strategic solutions such as 1031 exchanges, charitable income trusts, and more.
Ultimately, everything circles back to our commitment to financial planning as an ongoing process. Second 50 Financial is not just about wealth management, but about creating a robust financial future for our clients, assuring them that the wealth they've painstakingly built will continue to serve them efficiently as they journey into and through their second 50 years of life.
We offer tailored solutions for our clientele who are approaching or in their Second 50 years of life.
There are significant changes occurring during this time, requiring different, focused strategies.
Our Financial Planning Philosophy
The Foundational Plan
At the heart of our services at Second 50 Financial is the development of a foundational plan, established before any investment decisions are made. This plan, offered for a flat fee, is crucial in gaining a comprehensive understanding of our clients’ unique financial situations, forming the bedrock for all future decision-making. We acknowledge that financial planning is a dynamic journey, necessitating regular updates and monitoring. This is crucial to accommodate changes in our clients' personal and financial lives, as well as shifts in the market and investment landscape. Annual comprehensive meetings are key to this ongoing process, supplemented by additional meetings throughout the year when necessary. We also place a high value on collaboration with our clients' other professional advisors, including tax accountants, estate attorneys, real estate professionals, and insurance experts. This collaborative approach ensures a holistic financial strategy, with their participation in meetings bringing added value and ensuring a cohesive approach to our clients' overall financial health.
Ongoing Planning and Wealth Management
Following the Foundational Plan, our ongoing planning and wealth management services are integral to our clients' financial success. Included in our wealth management fee, this phase represents an evolving journey that requires consistent updates and monitoring. We adapt to changes in our clients' personal and financial circumstances, as well as shifts in the market and broader investment landscape.
Consistent meetings are a key aspect of this ongoing process, with the frequency and timing tailored to each client's needs and significant life events. This includes aspects of wealth preservation planning, ensuring not just the growth but also the protection of our clients' assets. Our strategies go beyond conventional approaches, incorporating innovative techniques and tools to safeguard and enhance our clients' wealth.
Collaboration with our clients' other professional advisors remains a high priority. By working closely with tax accountants, estate attorneys, real estate professionals, and insurance experts, we ensure that our financial strategies are all-encompassing and aligned with every facet of our clients' financial lives.
At Second 50 Financial, we are committed to a holistic approach. This means we consider the entire spectrum of our clients' financial interests, including investments outside our management.
Our comprehensive approach ensures that our strategies are not only focused on asset management but are also seamlessly integrated with our clients' overarching financial goals, thereby fostering more effective and personalized financial planning.
Who do you work with?
Many of our clients resonate with one or more of the following financial aspirations.
Aspiration for Work Optionality
Envision a future where work is a choice? Many share the apprehension of what happens when regular income ceases. We collaborate with individuals and families who aim to leverage their wealth, ensuring they're prepared for such transitions. Together, we focus on creating a financial foundation that offers both freedom and security."
A Focus on Income Generation
Transitioning from traditional employment/a business sale and income or already harnessing your assets for income? Everyone desires the assurance they won't outlive their wealth. Our approach seamlessly blends growth, income stability, and preservation, especially vital given life's unpredictable timeline. Collaborate with us to design a strategy that ensures your financial longevity and peace of mind.
A Complex Financial Landscape
Juggling a diverse array of investments and real estate? Our clients often navigate intricate portfolios, where the interplay of assets, tax implications, and estate strategies is paramount. Especially when it comes to the crucial transfer of wealth. Rely on our expertise to guide you through these complexities, ensuring a seamless and optimized wealth transition.
"Most of our clients possess a net worth ranging from $5 to $100 million. However, we also cater to individuals who find themselves in unique financial situations, such as significant inheritances, business sales, and other distinct circumstances. Regardless of the specifics, our focus remains on addressing the core financial aspirations and concerns shared by all our clients."
What distinguishes a boutique RIA from larger RIAs?
Having previously thrived at one of the nation’s most prominent RIAs, we took the pivotal step to establish our boutique RIA. This decision was rooted in our desire for greater autonomy over our firm’s trajectory and the tailored solutions we offer our clientele who are approaching or in their Second 50 years of life. There are significant changes occurring during this time requiring different, focused strategies. We’re confident that this shift brings unparalleled benefits to our clients. It not only broadens our horizons in financial planning and investment products but also introduces them to our strategic alliances with renowned firms like Northern Capital and Day Hagan. These multi-billion-dollar entities bolster our offerings with their expert investment support.
Today, we oversee nearly a quarter-billion in investments and shape financial strategies around assets surpassing a billion, including noteworthy real estate holdings. We have efficiently harnessed economies of scale to ensure our clients receive top-tier service. This is delivered without the bureaucratic intricacies often found in larger establishments. Our lack of a broker-dealer affiliation underscores our commitment to unbiased advice, cementing our position as fiduciaries. Our client base is cultivated purely through referrals; we refrain from partnering with custodians or engaging in split-fee arrangements. This approach maintains our client roster at a sustainable level, ensuring each receives an elite, “Four Seasons” caliber of service marked by consistent communication and ready availability.
While we’re ambitious about growth, it’s paramount that it’s the right kind. At the core of every decision, you’ll find the guiding hands of Kathleen and David.
Making a Difference
At Second 50 Financial, our unwavering commitment is to empower the future by making a dedicated, direct contribution to people whose lives have been severely impacted by a devastating event.
